South Dakota State, South Dakota, Northern Iowa, and Colorado State all recognized DJ Vonnahme’s talent and extended scholarship offers to him. Contemplating the opportunity presented by the two-time defending FCS champion SDSU Jackrabbits, Vonnahme ultimately made a decisive choice – to aim for the big leagues. The allure of being an Iowa Hawkeye proved too strong for the smaller schools to compete with.
“I considered South Dakota State because I admired the coaching staff,” he conveyed to HN. “That was really the only other option I pondered. Opting to walk on seemed like the best path for me because I believe I can experience the most growth within Iowa’s program, especially given their storied history of developing exceptional tight ends. “I’m eager to develop and thrive here. Playing for Iowa has always been a dream of mine. I couldn’t pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The Carroll (IA) Kuemper Catholic standout accepted Iowa’s preferred walk-on offer last July, committing to the tight end position after showcasing versatility by playing multiple roles for the Knights, including quarterback. The Hawkeyes boast an illustrious legacy at tight end, a prospect that excites Vonnahme.
“It aligns with my skill set, as I believe I can stretch the field vertically and possess the awareness to find open spaces,” he remarked. “Iowa values hard work and development above all. I’m thrilled about the potential growth I can achieve through their program because I know I’ve barely scratched the surface of my true potential. I’m eager to absorb knowledge and progress under the guidance of the best.”
Vonnahme’s senior season saw impressive statistics, including 28 receptions for 567 yards (20.3 YPC) and 12 touchdowns, along with three passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. Additionally, he contributed on the defensive end, leading the team with five interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. 247Sports ranks Vonnahme, standing at 6-4 and weighing 205 pounds, as the 22nd player in the state’s 2024 Class. His senior highlights showcase his speed, precise route running, and sure-handedness.
Vonnahme embraces the relentless pursuit of excellence, believing it aligns well with Iowa’s ethos. “Committing to hard work is always the right choice, both on and off the field. Discipline is crucial because I have lofty aspirations, and I need to embrace the tasks I dislike to achieve my ultimate goals of winning championships and earning my degree,” he emphasized. The business field interests Vonnahme, particularly Sales and Marketing, and he credits the Carroll community for instilling in him the values of perseverance, resilience, and gratitude.
