The Detroit Red Wings and forward Michael Rasmussen have reached a consensus on a 4-year contract extension worth $12.8 million. Standing at an imposing 6 feet 6 inches and weighing 221 pounds, Rasmussen’s performance over the past two seasons has merited this new deal.
Selected ninth overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Rasmussen initially faced smaller opponents, leveraging his size to gain a significant advantage. After participating in the Red Wings’ development camp and subsequent training camp, he made his NHL debut.
However, upon playing with the main team, he appeared sluggish and struggled against players of similar size and speed, indicating that he was not yet ready for the NHL level. As a result, he was assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League to refine his skills and speed.
Over time, Rasmussen demonstrated noticeable improvement, earning recalls to the Detroit team. While he showed signs of progress, he was limited to sporadic appearances until fully prepared for a regular roster spot. Questions arose among fans and media about whether he would fulfill the expectations associated with his draft position.
Following successful stints with the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League and the Griffins, Rasmussen aimed to establish himself in Detroit. Although initially hindered, he eventually adopted a physical style of play that generated offensive opportunities, indicating gradual improvement.
The previous season marked a significant turning point, as Rasmussen showcased improved skating and defensive prowess, transforming his overall game. His effectiveness along the boards and in front of the net earned him a role on the first penalty kill unit.
In the current season, Rasmussen has amassed 23 points in 55 games, demonstrating career-high potential in points. His elevated performance even warranted placement on the top line alongside captain Dylan Larkin, earning praise from the coaching staff.
Despite initial doubts, Rasmussen has evolved into a dependable middle-six forward, epitomizing the qualities expected of a Red Wings player. His relentless work ethic, coupled with a willingness to sacrifice his body for the team, reflects a remarkable transformation since his draft selection. At just 24 years old, Rasmussen exemplifies the player Detroit envisioned when drafting him ninth overall.
