Stephen Vogt Faces Lineup Decisions with MLB Star Jose Ramirez: A Flexible Approach for the Cleveland Guardians
Stephen Vogt faces numerous decisions regarding the composition of the Cleveland Guardians lineup, with one pivotal choice centering around the placement of MLB superstar Jose Ramirez. After spending several seasons batting third, Terry Francona elevated J-Ram to the second spot late in the previous season.
The question now arises: will the rookie manager maintain Ramirez’s current position, revert him back to the third slot, or will it be a fluid decision based on each game’s circumstances?
In a conversation with Mandy Bell of MLB.com, Vogt shared insights into the decision-making process, emphasizing Ramirez’s comfort level and the team’s strategy against the opposing starter.
Fortunately, the Guardians boast versatility regardless of the chosen direction. Both batting Ramirez third and second have proven effective in the past, offering the team flexibility in optimizing their offensive output.
Ramirez’s performance batting second towards the end of the 2023 season yielded a commendable slash line of .279/.354/.442, with an OPS of .796. Teaming up with Steven Kwan and Josh Naylor showcased a promising offensive dynamic.
Kwan’s ability to draw walks and consistently get on base complements Naylor’s demonstrated capability to provide protection for Ramirez. Vogt’s willingness to adjust the lineup based on matchups further enhances the team’s strategic depth.
Regarding Ramirez’s placement, Vogt noted, “There’s some days where the lineup is gonna be better with him in second and there’s gonna be some days where the lineup’s better with him in third, and just hopefully he feels comfortable with either one.”
As Opening Day approaches, the lineup configuration remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Vogt’s emphasis on versatility and adaptability underscores the team’s readiness to leverage various options throughout the season.
