A former Red Sox prospect lost in December’s Rule 5 draft underwent shoulder surgery on Wednesday, which could impact his future prospects. Left-hander Shane Drohan, selected by the White Sox in the Rule 5 draft, had surgery believed to be a nerve decompression.
This surgery will significantly delay his start to the season, and he is expected to begin a throwing program after the end of spring training. Drohan, 25, was a fifth-round pick for Boston in the shortened 2020 draft and became one of their top pitching prospects.

He struggled after a promotion to Triple-A last season, leading to the Red Sox leaving him off their 40-man roster, making him eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Drohan will need to spend the entire season on the White Sox’s big league roster and/or injured list, with 90 days on the active roster, to shed his Rule 5 status for the 2025 season.
