Georgia’s vs Dell McGee is over

RBU is in need of a new running back coach, as Dell McGee has been named the new head coach at Georgia State, becoming the fifth staff member to leave Georgia recently. This marks a change from the relatively strong staff continuity Georgia has had in recent years. Kirby Smart emphasized the importance of retention for success at SEC Media Days last July, noting that every full-time coach on this year’s staff was on last year’s staff. While Georgia has lost some key staff members, including Todd Monken, who was replaced by Mike Bobo, Smart has already filled three holes in his staff, providing insights into how he plans to replace the others.

McGee’s departure, though not unexpected, leaves a significant void. He was the run-game coordinator and running backs coach, with a track record of coaching some of Georgia’s best running backs, including Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, James Cook, Zamir White, and D’Andre Swift. His departure will also impact recruiting, as he was a highly regarded recruiter with roots in Georgia.

Bryan McClendon, the wide receivers coach, has also left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was in his second stint with Georgia and was the team’s passing game coordinator in 2023. Like McGee, McClendon was known for his coaching and recruiting abilities, having brought in players like Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, and Lorenzo Carter.

Scott Cochran, the Special Teams coordinator, resigned on Valentine’s Day to pursue other opportunities. Cochran was a key hire for Smart in 2020, known for his work as Alabama’s strength and conditioning coach. Kirk Benedict has been named the Bulldogs’ Special Teams Coordinator after serving as the team’s Special Teams Analyst.

Smart’s recent hires, such as Donte Williams and Travaris Robinson, reflect his focus on recruiting as well as coaching ability. Williams replaced Fran Brown and has a strong recruiting background, particularly on the West Coast. Robinson was brought in from Alabama to bolster the coaching staff and recruiting efforts.

Overall, Georgia’s coaching carousel has been active, but Smart’s strategic hires indicate a focus on maintaining the team’s success through strong coaching and recruiting efforts.
