The New York Mets suffer the loss of one of their key starting pitchers.

Spring Training has arrived! The Miami Marlins have recently secured a shortstop and are now anticipated to explore potential contract extensions. Meanwhile, it’s a good time to survey the developments across the division and assess their potential impact on the Marlins.

Kodai Senga

The New York Mets are currently facing an unexpected setback with their ace Kodai Senga. While I never wish injury upon anyone, I hope for Senga’s swift recovery. The question arises: How might this situation affect the Marlins?

An injury to the ace of the New York Mets could have implications for the Miami Marlins.

Kodai Senga plays a pivotal role in the New York Mets’ pitching rotation. The 31-year-old made his debut last season, showcasing a 2.98 ERA/3.63 FIP, with 10.9 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 across 29 games and 166.1 innings pitched.

While his strikeout rate was exceptional, his control was somewhat inconsistent. Notably, his FIP was notably higher than his ERA, suggesting he may be more suited for a mid-rotation role rather than a top-tier one.

The New York Mets have their sights set on contention in 2025 rather than 2024, considering the latter as a transitional year. However, they are still aiming to secure a playoff spot this season, albeit without the pressure to contend for a championship.

With Senga slated to miss the start of the season due to a posterior capsule strain in his throwing shoulder, the Mets’ pitching rotation will undoubtedly suffer a significant blow. If his injury turns out to be more severe and he misses an extended period, it could pose challenges for the team’s pitching depth.

Presently, the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves appear to be the primary competitors for the Miami Marlins. The Mets’ decline in performance could potentially push them further down the standings, bringing them closer to the Nationals, who are anticipated to finish at the bottom of the division.
