Examining Matt Chapman’s market following Cody Bellinger’s contract agreement
For weeks, the baseball world has focused on the “Boras Four,” including Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Blake Snell, and Jordan Montgomery, all represented by the Boras Corporation. These players remained unsigned until late February, leading to speculation about their future contracts. Bellinger recently signed a short-term deal with the Cubs, which could have implications for Chapman’s market.
The Cubs, one of the teams reportedly interested in Chapman, added Bellinger to their roster but could still use Chapman’s talents, especially given their unsettled situation at third base. While the team has options like Christopher Morel, Patrick Wisdom, and Nick Madrigal, Chapman could provide stability and depth, potentially as a designated hitter with Morel serving as a utility player.
However, the Cubs’ current payroll situation, just under the competitive balance tax threshold, may limit their ability to make another significant signing. Chapman, approaching his 31st birthday, may also prefer a longer-term deal than Bellinger’s, especially considering his defensive prowess, which tends to decline with age.
Aside from the Cubs, other teams linked to Chapman include the Blue Jays, Giants, and Mariners. The Blue Jays, in particular, have a crowded infield but could still find room for Chapman, especially considering his defensive skills. However, financial constraints and a focus on adding marginal upgrades may limit their pursuit.
The Giants, despite having J.D. Davis at third base, could benefit from Chapman’s superior defense, especially if they plan to audition Marco Luciano at shortstop. However, the team’s proximity to the competitive balance tax line and recent comments from their management suggest they may not pursue Chapman aggressively.
The Mariners, with Luis Urías and Josh Rojas currently slated for third base, could also use Chapman’s upgrade, but their focus on more marginal additions may rule out a significant pursuit. Other teams like the Angels, Mets, Yankees, and Phillies could theoretically fit Chapman, but various factors, including payroll constraints and roster considerations, may prevent them from making a serious push for his services.
