The New York Mets aren’t anticipated to be contenders in the National League this season. However, they’re set to welcome back a key player who could make a significant impact.

Diaz delivered an outstanding performance with the Mets in 2022. Across 62.0 innings, he recorded an impressive 118 strikeouts with an ERA standing at 1.31. His presence in the latter part of the Mets’ bullpen is expected to bolster their ability to clinch numerous tight games.

Despite the fact that closers typically appear in around 60 games annually, their contribution remains invaluable. Closing out a game by getting those final three outs is no easy feat.

Mets Insider Provides Update on Edwin Diaz’s Progress

The New York Mets aren’t expected to be front-runners in the National League this year. However, there’s anticipation surrounding the return of one impactful player for the upcoming season.

During last year’s World Baseball Classic, the Mets faced a setback when closer Edwin Diaz sustained a serious knee injury. His absence created a significant void in the Mets’ bullpen, leading to several blown games in the final innings.

Fortunately, Diaz is on track to be fully recovered by Opening Day. According to Anthony DiComo, Diaz took a significant step forward in his rehabilitation on Tuesday by engaging in activities such as throwing to bases and fielding his position.

Reflecting on Diaz’s stellar 2022 season with the Mets, where he amassed 118 strikeouts in 62.0 innings with an impressive 1.31 ERA, his presence in the backend of the Mets bullpen is expected to be instrumental in securing close games. Despite closers typically appearing in around 60 games per year, their impact is invaluable, given the challenge of securing the final three outs of a game.

However, the Mets face challenges beyond Diaz’s return, particularly in obtaining leads going into the final innings. The team’s roster has experienced setbacks over recent years, notably in the starting pitcher department. Originally, Kodai Senga was slated as the team’s ace, but he will be sidelined for the first month of the season due to a shoulder injury. Consequently, the Mets will rely on less experienced arms as starters.

While the Mets’ competitiveness this season may be in question, the return of Diaz provides a silver lining amidst their challenges.
