The Edmonton Oilers are currently finalizing a trade with the Washington Capitals.

On a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman discussed the possibility of the Edmonton Oilers engaging in a trade with the Washington Capitals to acquire forward Anthony Mantha.

Should The Edmonton Oilers Pursue Anthony Mantha?

Friedman highlighted Ken Holland’s previous association with Mantha, noting that Holland had drafted him 20th overall in the 2013 NHL Draft during his tenure as the general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. However, any discussion involving Holland inevitably brings up Detroit connections as the Trade Deadline approaches. But the crucial question remains: would Mantha be a good fit for Edmonton?

With 18 goals and 13 assists for a total of 31 points in 53 games of his ninth NHL season, Mantha’s career statistics include 283 points in 473 games played.

In terms of offensive output, he would provide valuable support for secondary scoring, potentially slotting in on either the second or third line. This has been a concern for the Oilers following the All-Star break, and the return of line adjustments has been met with some frustration.

However, there is one aspect of his game that warrants scrutiny. Despite his imposing physical stature at 6’5″ and 234 lbs., he doesn’t engage in as many hits as might be expected. He has accumulated 30 hits this season, with his highest total of 91 recorded during the 2017/2018 season.

Granted, his current team has played fewer games than Edmonton, but even some Oilers players who lack his size or aren’t known for playing a gritty style have more hits. It’s not to suggest that physicality is everything, but having that element can prove beneficial in a seven-game series when the intensity ramps up.

Another concern is his $5.7M cap hit, although it expires in the offseason. However, managing such contracts is a perennial consideration when aiming for a deep playoff run.
