Blake Corum’s NFL Draft Projection: Michigan’s Star Running Back Faces Unique Comparisons and Determination for Success

Blake Corum draws comparisons to legendary NFL figure Emmitt Smith.

Blake Corum, Michigan football’s fifth-highest rusher of all time and the record holder for touchdowns scored, isn’t currently projected to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in April.

Corum was among the record 18 Wolverines invited to the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, where he participated in various drills, including the 40-yard dash. During the combine, longtime sports analyst Skip Bayless made an intriguing comparison involving Corum.

Bayless, the host of Fox Sports 1’s “Undisputed,” drew parallels between Corum and the NFL’s leading all-time rusher.

Last season, Corum showcased his prowess by accumulating 1,245 rushing yards and scoring 27 touchdowns for Michigan football. Despite his impressive achievements, the Marshall, Virginia native, standing at 5 feet 8 inches, has been likened more often to Detroit Lions legend Barry Sanders than to Emmitt Smith, another NFL icon known for his low-to-the-ground running style.

During the combine, Corum posted a 40-yard dash time of 4.53 seconds, which is considered below average for running backs, according to evaluations from Pro Football Focus.

Smith, who also faced criticisms regarding his speed during his NFL draft year out of Florida, was eventually selected 17th overall in the 1990 NFL Draft. Despite initial doubts, he surpassed expectations throughout his 15-year NFL career, primarily with the Dallas Cowboys and later with the Arizona Cardinals, accumulating a remarkable 18,355 rushing yards.

Corum has expressed his commitment to bringing a blue-collar work ethic and exceptional effort to whichever NFL team selects him in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“I’ve come this far because of hard work, and I won’t ease up just because I’m entering the NFL and making a roster,” Corum stated, as reported by Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press. “I’ll push myself even harder. This is a dream, but I won’t consider it fulfilled until I’ve given my all.”
