Michigan football has officially hired Don “Wink” Martindale, a longtime NFL assistant, as its new defensive coordinator. Martindale, 60, most recently served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants for two seasons. Prior to that, he spent nine seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, including four as their defensive coordinator.
During his time with the Ravens, Martindale’s defenses consistently ranked among the best in the NFL. He is known for his aggressive play-calling and innovative defensive schemes, which have earned him respect from NFL coaches. Martindale’s hiring is seen as a continuation of Michigan’s recent trend of hiring coaches with NFL experience, as he joins former Ravens assistants Mike Macdonald and Jesse Minter, who previously served as Michigan’s defensive coordinators.
Martindale will face some challenges in his new role, including rebuilding a defensive staff that has undergone significant changes and replacing key players from last season’s national championship team. However, he will inherit a defense that still boasts plenty of talent, including projected All-Americans Will Johnson and Mason Graham.
Martindale’s task will be to maintain the high standards set by Michigan’s defense last season, which led the nation in both points allowed per game (10.4) and yards allowed per game (247.0). It will be a tough act to follow, but Martindale’s experience and reputation suggest he is up to the challenge.
