Throughout the past week, the Edmonton Oilers deployed one of their scouts to observe the New Jersey Devils during their California road trip. Recently, Darren Dreger identified Tyler Toffoli as a potential acquisition target for Edmonton.
At 31 years old, Toffoli, a forward, has accumulated 44 points in 59 games during his 12th NHL season. Over the course of his career, spanning 792 games, he has amassed a total of 510 points. Notably, Toffoli clinched a Stanley Cup victory during his sophomore season with the Los Angeles Kings in 2013/2014 and reached the Finals again in 2020/2021 with the Montreal Canadiens.
A significant portion of Toffoli’s points, exceeding 100, have been scored on the powerplay. While the Oilers boast a formidable powerplay unit, Toffoli’s addition could provide a boost to Edmonton’s second powerplay line. Additionally, his playoff experience would offer valuable leadership in the locker room.
Previously, Pavel Buchnevich was highlighted as a potential target for Edmonton, with one year remaining on his contract beyond this season. However, if that option falls through, Toffoli presents a more cost-effective alternative, with a projected salary $1.5 million lower. The potential trade package could involve a first-round draft pick along with a roster player. The feasibility of extending Toffoli’s contract and accommodating it within next season’s salary cap remains a topic for future consideration.
