Breaking News: Padres’ Pitcher Placed on Restricted List for Family-Related Personal Matter
Yu Darvish has faced a challenging 2024 season. Although his performance on the mound has been solid (4-3, 3.20 ERA, 53 K, 1.07 WHIP), he has been on the injured list twice. Despite currently being on the injured list, the San Diego Padres recently moved Darvish to the restricted list, catching the attention of fans everywhere.
Darvish, who was already on the injured list with a groin injury, has now been moved to the restricted list to address a family issue. Although it appeared he was nearing a return to action for San Diego, his status is now highly uncertain. The team has announced that there is no timetable for his potential return.

Yu Darvish expected to be sidelined even longer for Padres
The hope is clearly that Darvish’s off-field issue isn’t serious and that he can return to play soon. However, considering how the Padres are managing the situation, it seems unlikely that fans will see him on the mound in the near future.
Players on the restricted list remain under team control but are not with the team and are not required to receive compensation. Essentially, Darvish remains on the Padres roster but is away from the team and unpaid during his time on this list.
This is another setback for Darvish, who was already on the injured list attempting to return to the field. Now, he must address personal matters before focusing on his recovery. The duration of his absence is uncertain, and with San Diego not providing a timetable, it is likely to be a lengthy one.
With Darvish out indefinitely, Adam Mazur will need to step up in the starting rotation. However, Mazur has struggled in his six starts this season, with a 7.52 ERA. Compounding the issue, Joe Musgrove is on the 60-day injured list, leaving the team with few options.
San Diego might consider acquiring another pitcher before the trade deadline, but this situation is far from ideal as they aim for a playoff push in the coming months. While the hope is for Darvish to resolve his personal matters and return soon, the Padres will have to manage without one of their top pitchers for the foreseeable future.
