Emotional Moment Carlton Coach Tears Up as Star Player Returns
Carlton Coach Michael Voss Emotionally Announces Zac Williams' Return to AFL After 18-Month Absence
Carlton coach Michael Voss became emotional in a touching moment as he informed Zac Williams of his return to the AFL after an 18-month absence.
During Monday night’s AFL 360, Voss announced Williams’ participation in the Opening Round match against Brisbane, marking a significant comeback from adversity.
Having endured an ACL tear in February last year, Williams also faced the tragic loss of his sister Sammy later in the year. Footage of Voss delivering the news to Williams and the team was aired on Tuesday’s AFL 360.
“Zaccy, you’re gonna play this week, you’re gonna play,” Voss said, visibly moved. “You’ve got me (emotional), mate.”
Reflecting on Williams’ journey, Voss expressed his pride, recalling the difficult moments and the resilience Williams showed throughout.
“I was on a plane to your home, for your sister’s funeral. God, it was excellent by the way,” Voss said emotionally. “It (this moment) was a long way away. It certainly didn’t need to be football; it was about life for you for a while. I didn’t know if we were ever gonna get back to you mate. It’s been a big 12 months for you, 18 months for you. That’s the journey you’ve been on.”
Blues captain Patrick Cripps, speaking on AFL 360, noted the significance of the moment, emphasizing the strong bonds formed within football clubs and the support they provide during challenging times.
“I just think it shows you, footy clubs – how special they are,” Cripps said. “You have your family but you’re around these people for long periods of time. You build such strong connections with people which is what makes it so special.”
He also highlighted Williams’ resilience and the positive impact football has on him, describing him as someone who thrives on the field.
“Recovering from a knee is minor compared to what he’s gone through last year. To rehab during that time, grieve, and then to see him back,” Cripps remarked. “He’s a guy that footy brings the best out of him. You can see the energy, he smiles… and he plays like that too. He plays free, he’s got that dash and creativity.”
The emotional moment captured the essence of the broader significance of football beyond wins and losses, showcasing the supportive and familial environment within the club.
