Harry McKay Reflects on Preseason Triumph and Goal-Scoring Redemption

Harry McKay discusses his rigorous preseason and overcoming goal-scoring challenges in 2024.

The 26-year-old forward played a crucial role in Carlton’s narrow one-point victory over Brisbane at the Gabba on Friday, securing the Blues’ first win at the venue since 2013.

McKay himself scored the match-winning goal, a feat he might not have achieved in 2023 or even during the recent preseason. Despite the pressure on the 2021 Coleman Medal winner, McKay credits his offseason focus on goal-scoring for boosting his confidence and resilience against doubters.

“My main focus over the summer was establishing a consistent routine for every kick,” McKay shared during a post-match interview on Fox Footy. “I now have full confidence in my ability to execute that routine under any circumstances.”

Carlton staged an impressive comeback after trailing by a staggering 46 points during the second quarter, ultimately securing an unexpected opening-round victory.

While McKay contributed three crucial goals to the team’s success, it was his final goal that will be forever cherished. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, McKay attributed his success to sticking to his routine and maintaining focus.

“I experienced a mix of nerves and excitement, but I remained committed to my routine,” McKay recalled. “It was a great feeling to see the ball go through the posts.”

Unfortunately, the match was marred by injuries to key players from both teams. Brisbane’s Keidean Coleman suffered a hyper-extended knee and was substituted at halftime, while Carlton’s Sam Docherty was forced off the field due to knee complaints.
