Michigan Football has officially declared the addition of four new members to its defensive coaching staff.

Michigan Football has made its new coaching staff official, confirming the long-reported hires on the defensive side. In a press release on Friday afternoon, the program announced the appointments of Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator, Greg Scruggs as defensive line coach, Brian Jean-Mary as linebackers coach and run game coordinator, and LaMar Morgan as defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator. Additionally, former defensive back Brad Hawkins has been hired as a graduate assistant coach.

In the press release, Sherrone Moore shared his thoughts on each of the new hires and what they will bring to the Michigan program:

Regarding Martindale, Moore expressed excitement about having him as the defensive coordinator, highlighting his experience coaching hall of fame players and coordinating top defenses. Moore believes Martindale’s expertise will help Michigan’s players excel on the field, emphasizing his mentoring role for many great defensive players and coaches.

On Scruggs, Moore noted their previous connection from their time at Louisville, praising his drive, passion, and leadership qualities. Moore sees Scruggs as a great mentor for the defensive line players, confident that he will help them achieve their football goals.

Regarding Jean-Mary, Moore mentioned their long-standing coaching relationship, emphasizing Jean-Mary’s coaching and communication skills. Moore expressed excitement about Jean-Mary leading the linebacking corps, highlighting his recruiting and player development abilities, and his familiarity with the program.

Regarding Morgan, Moore mentioned his positive impression of him during the hiring process, noting his recommendation by Jesse Minter and his reputation as a top-notch defensive backs coach. Moore sees Morgan as an excellent teacher and communicator, excited about his mentoring role for the defensive secondary and coordinating the passing game.

Overall, Moore believes that the new defensive staff, along with the returning players like Mason Graham, Will Johnson, and Kenneth Grant, will continue the standard of excellence set by Michigan’s defense in recent years, despite coaching transitions.
