Relationship between Verstappen’s future and Red Bull F1…

It was revealed on Friday that Marko is being investigated by Red Bull’s parent company for alleged leaks to the media regarding the investigation into team boss Christian Horner’s conduct.

Marko and Red Bull director Oliver Mintzlaff are scheduled for crucial discussions on the matter on Saturday ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Marko faces the possibility of suspension or removal from his position.

However, during the post-qualifying press conference in Jeddah, Verstappen made it clear that Marko’s fate at the team would impact his own future.

Speaking to Dutch-language journalists, Verstappen went further, stating unequivocally that he “cannot continue” with the team that propelled him to three world championships – and likely a fourth – if Marko departs.

“I have consistently emphasized that he must remain, so I cannot continue without him,” Verstappen declared. “Helmut is crucial for the team and for my own continuation, as well as for the team’s future. Everyone has their own role, as it has always been. Following the passing of Dietrich Mateschitz, some responsibilities were redistributed.”

“I’ve consistently emphasized that Helmut must remain for the future, as long as he is alive. I’ve always been very clear about that, as I was last year after Qatar. I hope that stance doesn’t change.”

The conflict between Marko and Horner appears to have evolved into a struggle for control of the championship-winning team. Despite Horner’s desire to move on from recent events, recent remarks from Verstappen’s father, Jos, suggest that Horner’s wishes may not come to fruition.

“I think it’s too late for that now,” Jos told the Daily Mail while participating in the Hannut Rally in Belgium. “If that’s what he wants, fine, but I don’t think it will be possible. I don’t want to elaborate further as it may cause problems. But what matters most to me is that Max is happy, that’s what counts for me. I just want him to be happy.”

While comments from the Verstappen camp could be seen as a bluff, it is more probable that they serve as strong indications that the 26-year-old has clauses in his contract that could allow him to leave before its scheduled end date in 2028 if certain key “pillars” of the team, including Marko, were to depart.

“I’m also part of this journey. I’ve committed until 2028, so it’s crucial that certain key figures remain within the team,” he stated. “Ultimately, it’s about the dynamics within the team and effective communication. If integral elements disappear, it could lead to an untenable situation.”

When asked about the possibility of Marko and Horner co-existing at the team or if the damage is irreparable, Verstappen opted for a diplomatic response. “I’ve consistently emphasized the importance of retaining all essential individuals,” he replied. “What truly matters is acknowledging the accomplishments achieved alongside Dietrich from the outset. While challenges may arise, maintaining open lines of communication is essential, just as it is in any relationship.”

“Helmut and Christian have always maintained a strong working relationship and achieved significant milestones together,” he added.

“And I believe Helmut has consistently backed Christian, even during the team’s tougher times in terms of performance, so that aspect deserves respect,” he commented. “Communication is key and can often help resolve issues.”
