Hamilton Tiger-Cats Sign Top Defensive Back Jamal Peters: More Than Just a Financial Move
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats made Jamal Peters the highest-paid defensive back in the CFL to lure him over in free agency, but for the star corner, the decision to leave Toronto was about more than just money.
“I’m a family guy, so having my family at my games is important to me. I didn’t want to go too far from home. Hamilton, they’re all about family,” Peters shared in an interview on the Eatin’ Em Raw Podcast. “They welcomed me with open arms, and I couldn’t turn that down. I love everything about the fans, the community, and I already know some of the guys on the team, so I’m excited to wear that black and gold.”
While the financial offer played a role, the 27-year-old believed he deserved a substantial contract wherever he went. The Tiger-Cats emerged as a top choice early in free agency, given their available cap space and the need to strengthen the defense after another early playoff exit.
“I knew my value, I knew I was worth it, and I felt like I could set the market,” Peters admitted. “Once the tampering period began, I didn’t see myself going back to Toronto. I was waiting for Hamilton to reach out. I’ve made plenty of plays against them, so I knew they’d come calling.”
Peters isn’t the only one excited about his addition to Hamilton’s defense. New head coach Scott Milanovich is relieved not to have to scheme against the shutdown corner anymore, especially considering Peters’ impressive track record against the Tiger-Cats.
“He’s tall, he’s a great cover guy, he’s physical, and he’s got attitude,” Milanovich remarked on Ticats Today. “With Simoni (Lawrence) retiring, you need someone to fill that energy, heart-and-soul role, especially on defense. You need it on offense too, but defense particularly, and I think he’s that guy.”
In his 36 CFL games, interrupted briefly by a stint with the Atlanta Falcons, Peters has racked up 120 defensive tackles, 11 interceptions, a sack, and two forced fumbles. The 2022 CFL all-star sees himself as a similar player to his new coach, an energy-bringer who can set the tone for the defense.
“I’m outgoing, I love having fun, and I’m passionate about football. If I make a play, you’ll see me dancing most of the time. My personality is what sets me apart,” he explained.
“I lead by example, and I want to mentor the young guys on how to play the game right. I’ll hold the secondary to a high standard. I like the role they’ve given me as a leader, and I plan to set the tone and lead the way for that secondary.”
After back-to-back 8-10 seasons, Peters wasn’t the only defensive reinforcement brought in by Hamilton. The team traded for Canadian linebacker Jordan Williams and signed defensive ends Brandon Barlow and Nick Usher, as well as defensive tackle Dewayne Hendrix.
These additions have Peters excited about the future of the defense.
“Our defense is going to be fast, aggressive, and we’re going to hit hard. I love everything about our defense, and Coach Mark (Washington) is putting us in positions to make plays,” Peters declared.
“We haven’t started camp yet, but I’m expecting big things from our defense. We’ll hold each other accountable and do whatever it takes to get back on top. Once we set the tone, people will respect our defense.”
