Montreal Canadiens’ Deadline Day Moves and Roster Management

The Montreal Canadiens made a couple of trades just before the trade deadline, which was on Friday afternoon. They managed to pull off two trades before the deadline. One significant move was trading Jake Allen to the New Jersey Devils for a third-round pick, which could potentially become a second-round pick if he plays enough games next season.

Additionally, they acquired Jacob Perreault from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for Jan Mysak. Perreault, a 21-year-old former first-round pick, has shown promise but hasn’t had outstanding performance in the AHL so far. Hopefully, joining the Canadiens, where his father Yanic played, will bring out his best as a new member of the Laval Rocket.

Apart from trades, the Canadiens also sent down Joshua Roy and Jayden Struble to the Laval Rocket, but immediately called them back up to the NHL roster after the trade deadline passed. This move was made because players need to be on an AHL roster by the deadline to be eligible for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Roy and Struble will continue to play for the Canadiens but can assist the Rocket in the playoffs if needed.

However, there’s a league rule allowing only four call-ups from the AHL after the trade deadline. Even though Roy and Struble didn’t actually go down to Laval, they count as two call-ups, leaving the Canadiens with only two more for the season. This leaves them with a limited roster size, making it crucial to save the remaining call-ups for emergencies, such as injuries.

While it would be ideal for young players like Logan Mailloux or Sean Farrell to have a taste of NHL action this season, call-ups will be limited to necessity for the rest of the season for the Canadiens.
