Unexpected Turn: Michigan Safety Quinten Johnson Reverses Decision, Set to Return for Sixth Year

Michigan football defensive player not entering NFL draft

For a period, the absence of news concerning Michigan football safety Quinten Johnson suggested that his return to the program might be unlikely. However, a month after the majority of players had announced their intentions to enter the NFL draft, Johnson surprised by making a similar declaration, marking his departure from the program after his fifth year.

Nevertheless, it seems there has been a shift in perspective.

On Monday evening, Johnson revealed that he had secured a name, image, and likeness deal with Randy Wise Automotive, hinting at a potential return for his sixth year. Subsequently, it has been confirmed that he does indeed plan to come back.

According to a report from Clayton Sayfie of The Wolverine, Johnson, entering his sixth season of college football, initially declared for the 2024 NFL Draft on February 2. However, Chris Balas of TheWolverine.com stated on March 7 that Johnson was considering his options, leaving open the possibility of his return for the 2024 season.

Now, a source close to the situation has confirmed that he intends to don the winged helmet for another season. The Wolverines are set to commence spring practices on March 18.

While we noted last week on the Locked On Wolverines Podcast that this was a potential scenario, it is now corroborated by multiple reports.

With Johnson returning for a sixth year, Michigan’s safety position will boast a trio of seasoned players, alongside Rod Moore and Makari Paige, as Keon Sabb has chosen to transfer to Alabama.

Johnson’s impact became more pronounced last season, highlighted by notable plays such as his crucial stop against Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka and his forced fumble against Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, which was recovered by Michigan cornerback Josh Wallace.
