The Sydney Roosters are seriously considering the recruitment of a rugby union star.
The Sydney Roosters, having successfully recruited Mark Nawaqanitawase from rugby union, are now reportedly considering signing another rugby union star. Max Jorgensen, currently off-contract with the NSW Waratahs and Rugby Australia at the end of 2024, is being eyed by the Roosters.
Jorgensen, a member of the Wallabies’ 2023 Rugby World Cup squad until he suffered a fractured fibula, is the son of former player Peter Jorgensen, who had stints with the Eastern Suburbs (1995-96) and Penrith Panthers (1997-01).
While a move to his father’s former club could be a possibility, Jorgensen has expressed a desire to remain in rugby union. Nine’s 100% Footy reporter Danny Weidler stated, “The name that keeps getting tossed at me in maybe the next 12, 18 to 24 months is Max Jorgensen the rugby player … he’s someone they’re seriously looking at.”
Weidler also dismissed rumors linking the Sydney Roosters to Zac Lomax from the St George Illawarra Dragons. Despite ongoing speculation about Lomax’s future with the Red V, there were suggestions that the Roosters were interested in him, especially with the impending departures of Daniel Tupou, Joseph Suaalii, and Joseph Manu.
Lomax is currently contracted until the end of 2026, earning $800,000 per season. However, reports surfaced indicating his dissatisfaction with a positional change during the off-season.
Additionally, Weidler addressed rumors regarding Joseph Suaalii potentially reconsidering his deal with Rugby Australia to stay in the NRL with the Roosters. Weidler clarified that he had confirmed with Phil Waugh, the chief executive of Rugby Australia, that they intend to honor Suaalii’s contract. Waugh assured Weidler that all aspects of the deal promised to Suaalii are on the table and will be delivered as agreed.
