Why Cavs Star is now ineligible for major awards

Donovan Mitchell Faces String of Injuries, Raising Concerns for Cavs

Donovan Mitchell is not typically seen as injury-prone, but the 2023-24 season has presented him with various health challenges, the latest being a knee injury that has kept him sidelined. Mitchell’s absence continued in the Cleveland Cavaliers’ recent loss to the Phoenix Suns, marking his sixth consecutive missed game. With a total of 18 games missed, Mitchell is now ineligible for individual awards this season, including making the All-NBA team or contending for the MVP award.

The NBA’s introduction of a 65-game minimum aimed to discourage load management but inadvertently pressured players to play through injuries. Fortunately, the Cavaliers have prioritized caution in Mitchell’s recovery. This season has become Mitchell’s most injury-riddled, surpassing the 19 games missed in the 2020-21 season due to an ankle injury. The current season has seen Mitchell grapple with a hamstring issue, groin soreness, his ongoing knee problem, and several unrelated illnesses.

While missing out on individual awards, especially after making the All-NBA Second Team, is disappointing for Mitchell, the primary focus remains on his complete recovery. The exact timeline for Mitchell’s return remains uncertain, but the priority is ensuring he reaches full health, distinguishing his situation from teammate Evan Mobley’s, who faces a more prolonged absence.
