Journalist Host criticizes the handling of Leniu ban, citing ‘pure ignorance’.

Some are questioning the appropriateness of Spencer Leniu’s eight-game suspension for a racist slur against Broncos player Ezra Mam, with two journalists arguing that the punishment was too severe. Despite Leniu’s apology to Mam and admission of guilt, he was handed the suspension after a hearing at NRL headquarters. Journalist Paul Kent believes that Leniu’s punishment may have been influenced by the emotional nature of the situation.

Kent argued that in the case at hand, common-sense reasoning has been overshadowed by emotional reactions. He noted that severe penalties in NRL history typically involve violent offenses, which this incident is not.

While not justifying the actions, he suggested that some perspective has been lost due to heightened emotions. Riccio added that the length of the process, from the incident in Vegas to the hearing, was excessively long, which contributed to the issue.

Read initially believed that an eight-week suspension was fair but changed his opinion after speaking with Olakau’atu, who, like Leniu, is of Pacific Island descent and had never heard of Adam Goodes. Olakau’atu’s perspective led Read to consider that Leniu’s actions may have been due to ignorance rather than malicious intent.
