This week’s Roundup may feature fewer mock drafts due to the focus on free agency, which is dominating headlines and leading to rapidly changing rosters. As a result, some draft projections may quickly become outdated depending on when they were published.

However, this situation offers a valuable reminder that mock drafts are seldom completely accurate. Their primary value lies in offering insights into organizational philosophies and identifying players who could fit well with the Lions’ scheme and culture.

With that in mind, let’s examine some of the projections for this week.

Adonai Mitchell, a wide receiver from Texas, is projected as a potential pick for the Detroit Lions.

In this mock draft scenario, the Detroit Lions address their need to upgrade at the outside receiver position, potentially due to Josh Reynolds leaving in free agency. The analysis highlights that Jared Goff excels at throwing in routes, and Adonai Mitchell is considered one of the best in this draft class at running in routes. Mitchell’s size and speed are seen as valuable additions to the Lions’ receiving corps, providing them with a new element they currently lack.

Keon Coleman, a wide receiver from Florida State University.

“The Lions have two standout receivers in Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta, but both are relatively undersized for their positions. Detroit needs to add size, and Keon Coleman fits the bill. With a large catch radius and toughness in the middle of the field, he excels at routes like the dig, which is a favorite of Jared Goff’s.

Coleman has shown at Florida State that he can make big plays on designed touches and win jump balls on the outside. Among wide receivers in this class, Coleman is seen as having the highest potential ceiling.” — Solak

Erik’s Thoughts:

The Lions have clear needs at left guard and wide receiver, specifically at the WR-X role. Both Adonai Mitchell (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) and Keon Coleman (6-foot-3, 213 pounds) are natural fits for the WR-X position and offer higher developmental ceilings than Josh Reynolds, the previous WR-X who is currently a free agent. Mitchell and Coleman could be favorites to win the starting WR-X role in training camp.

Given that the Lions have drafted offensive skill players like Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, and Jameson Williams in recent seasons, some may question if general manager Brad Holmes would prioritize another offensive player in the top 50 picks. However, if Mitchell or Coleman are the highest-rated players on the Lions’ draft board, Holmes might choose to select them.
