The news about Clare Pettyfor leaving Collingwood for Melbourne has caused some concern, especially with how Collingwood is presenting it. Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson doesn’t think the word “poaching” accurately describes Pettyfor’s move.
According to AFL Media journalist Josh Gabelich, Pettyfor, who was Collingwood’s general manager of football operations, is returning to Melbourne, where she previously worked until 2022. However, Wilson believes there’s more to the story.
Wilson explained her perspective on Nine’s Footy Classified, suggesting that Pettyfor’s move might not be as straightforward as Collingwood portrays it. She mentioned that Pettyfor initially joined Collingwood to work with Graham Wright, but less than 18 months later, she’s leaving her role in the football department. Wilson hinted at possible issues within Collingwood’s football department, including disappointment among some staff members.
While Wright is on leave, former assistant coaches Justin Leppitsch and Brendon Bolton are taking on more responsibilities. Wilson expressed concerns about the unity within Collingwood’s football department and suggested that Pettyfor’s departure has disappointed some female staff members.
Wilson clarified that there isn’t necessarily a gender issue at Collingwood but emphasized that the club’s portrayal of Pettyfor’s departure might not be accurate. She believes it’s important to understand the full story behind Pettyfor’s move and how it reflects on Collingwood’s current situation.
This development comes amid Collingwood’s disappointing start to the season, with Wilson mentioning the “awful” performance in Round 1 against the Swans. As they aim to bounce back, the Magpies face St Kilda in their upcoming match at the MCG.
