New Additions to the Tiger-Cats

Tiger-Cats Bolster Defense with Signing of Avery Young and Welcome Calvin McCarty to Coaching Staff

Based on the CFL Transactions list, the Tiger-Cats have recently signed American defensive back Avery Young. During the 2024 free agency period, the Tiger-Cats boosted their defense with the addition of Young. He now joins a defensive backfield unit led by CFL All-Star Jamal Peters and National defensive back Stavros Katsantonis.

Young, hailing from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, stands at 6’0” and weighs 198 pounds. He played college football at Rutgers University from 2018 to 2022, where he showcased his skills in 57 games, tallying 320 total tackles, 3.0 quarterback sacks, three interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery. Young was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023.

Moving on to the coaching staff, the Tiger-Cats finalized their lineup early in the spring, except for a running backs coach. However, former CFL fullback Calvin McCarty recently announced via Twitter that he has joined the Tiger-Cats as their new running backs coach. McCarty brings his extensive playing experience from a five-year career in the CFL as a fullback, having played for Edmonton from 2016 to 2019 and for the Calgary Stampeders in 2021. This opportunity in Hamilton marks McCarty’s first venture into coaching a position in the CFL.
