The top three outfield prospects for the Astros in 2024.

As we approach the 2024 season, I will be highlighting the top three prospects at each position based on their current performance and potential future impact. This series will lead up to my updated top 30 prospects list before the season begins. This week, we are focusing on the outfield position.

1. Jacob Melton:
Drafted by the Astros in the 2nd round of the 2022 draft from Oregon State, Melton had an exceptional junior year, earning Pac-12 player of the year honors. He is a left-handed hitter with a strong offensive profile, including above-average power and speed. Melton has shown promising skills both at the plate and in the outfield, making him a potential standout player. In 2023, he played 99 games, hitting 23 home runs and stealing 46 bases.

2. Joey Loperfido:
Loperfido was drafted in 2021 and has steadily progressed through the Astros’ minor league system. A left-handed hitter known for his ability to work counts, draw walks, and make contact, Loperfido had a breakout season in 2023, hitting .278 with 25 home runs and 27 stolen bases. He has the potential to be a versatile defender, playing primarily in the outfield but also seeing time at first base.

3. Luis Baez:
Signed during the 2022 international signing period, Baez is a promising young outfielder with impressive power from the right side. He is a solid athlete who should be an adequate defender in the corner outfield positions. In 2023, he played in rookie ball and at Fayetteville, posting a .838 OPS with 11 home runs and 38 runs batted in. Scouts believe he has the potential to hit 30+ home runs in the majors.

Additional mentions:
– Kenedy Corona: Acquired in a trade with the Mets, Corona is a well-built outfielder with power and speed. In 2023, he played in Double-A, hitting 20 home runs and stealing 31 bases.
– Zach Cole: Drafted in the 10th round in 2022, Cole has shown impressive power and speed, with a .892 OPS in Single-A and a .829 OPS in High-A in 2023. He finished the season with 19 home runs and 37 stolen bases.
– Colin Barber: A 4th round pick in 2019, Barber has shown promise as a hitter but has struggled with injuries. In 2023, he played 79 games in Double-A, posting a .792 OPS with 11 home runs.
