John Schneider has revealed the Toronto Blue Jays’ opening day starting pitcher.

Jose Berrios had a standout 2023 season as a starting pitcher for the Blue Jays, finishing with an 11-12 record, a 3.65 ERA, 189.2 innings pitched, and 184 strikeouts. His performance earned him his first Gold Glove Award, a significant achievement considering his struggles in the 2022 season, where he posted a 5.23 ERA. Upon learning that he would be the opening day starting pitcher, Berrios expressed his gratitude, stating, “This is a pleasure. I am so happy, and I know my family and teammates are happy. They have congratulated me already, and I feel really proud.” Berrios’ selection for opening day honors his consistency and resilience on the mound, especially after his early exit in the 2023 postseason, a decision that puzzled many. Facing the Tampa Bay Rays, Berrios will look to deliver a strong performance, showcasing his skills as a reliable and formidable pitcher.

Romano and Swanson are dealing with arm injuries, which could affect their availability for the Blue Jays.

Erik Swanson has faced a series of unfortunate events in 2024, starting with his four-year-old son’s hospitalization after being hit by a car. Now, Swanson is dealing with right forearm tightness. Fortunately, an MRI revealed no significant injury or inflammation, and he is expected to return to action soon. Meanwhile, star closer Jordan Romano is also sidelined with an arm injury and right elbow inflammation. His MRI showed no serious issues, and he will receive an anti-inflammatory shot. Although Romano will miss the Blue Jays’ opening day, his absence is expected to be short-lived. Fans and teammates are hopeful for Swanson and Romano’s swift recoveries.

Looking ahead, all eyes will be on Jose Berrios to see if he can continue his impressive performance from the 2023 season. The talented starting pitcher, now 29 years old, has been diligently training for the upcoming season since the end of the last one. Additionally, fans are eager for Kevin Gausman’s return as he recovers from a shoulder injury. These situations highlight the importance of having depth and backup options on the team to address unexpected injuries.
