Brisbane will face a significant loss with prop Payne Haas set to undergo knee surgery, sidelining him for up to six weeks. Haas aggravated the injury during the round-two win over South Sydney.
Broncos coach Kevin Walters had already ruled him out of the NRL grand-final rematch against Penrith, and now Haas may not return until round nine. Broncos performance chief Dave Ballard confirmed that Haas will undergo an arthroscopy next week based on the specialist’s recommendation.
“We always prioritize the long-term health of the player, so while Payne will miss some games now, we expect a much better outcome once he returns, especially with the bulk of the season still ahead. The recovery from this surgery can take up to six weeks, but we know Payne is dedicated to his rehab, and we anticipate a similar commitment this time around.”
Haas will be joined on the sidelines by Broncos captain Adam Reynolds, who is out with a medial collateral ligament injury.
Coach Kevin Walters had initially included Haas in the squad, hoping he would get through Wednesday’s captain’s run without any issues. However, Haas remained in the rehab group, prompting the decision to err on the side of caution.
Roosters recruit Fletcher Baker will make his starting debut, with rookie prop Xavier Willison coming into the 17.
“Payne won’t be playing,” Walters confirmed. “We will start Fletcher Baker. Xavier Willison comes into the 17, and he is a terrific prospect. Payne feels he is letting the team down, but he’s not. He didn’t feel 100 percent today. He is a key player for us, so we will play him when he is fit.”
Walters expressed confidence in Jock Madden, who will replace Reynolds, and believes Madden will rise to the challenge against Nathan Cleary.
“It’s an awesome chance for Jock. He played in the trials, and we love what he brings to our team,” Walters said. “He had the choice of us or Penrith (before signing with Brisbane), and I am pleased he chose us.
He gets an opportunity tomorrow night to reward the Broncos and his teammates with a strong performance. He has matured a lot, particularly under Adam (Reynolds) and his leadership and guidance. He has all the skills, and we are confident he will continue to improve, and you will see that against the Panthers.”
