Jonathan Aranda #62 of the Tampa Bay Rays
Jonathan Aranda, the designated hitter for the Rays, is set to start the season on the injured list due to a broken right ring finger, as reported by the Tampa Bay Times on Thursday. The 25-year-old Aranda sustained the injury while fielding a ground ball on Tuesday. Consequently, he will undergo surgery to have a pin inserted into his finger and is projected to be sidelined for a period of 4-to-6 weeks, according to the report.
Throughout spring training, Aranda showcased his prowess at the plate, boasting an impressive .371 batting average, .421 on-base percentage, and .571 slugging percentage. His notable performance included hitting four doubles, one home run, and driving in seven runs across 13 games. Originally slated to be the Rays’ primary designated hitter against right-handed pitchers at the beginning of the season, Aranda also displayed versatility defensively by seeing action at first, second, and third bases, as well as in left field, during his initial two seasons in the majors in 2022 and 2023.
Aranda’s career statistics with the Rays reflect his contributions to the team since his signing in 2015. Over the course of 66 games, he has maintained a .212 batting average, hitting four home runs and tallying 19 RBIs.
