“The pressure is real” Swan midfielder laments.

James Jordon realized he had to secure a new team by the conclusion of last winter. Despite being the substitute player in Melbourne’s 2021 premiership, he was either substituted in or out of eight matches last year. While he was getting game time, it just wasn’t sufficient.

Clubs began showing interest in James Jordon midway through the year, sensing an opportunity to recruit the midfielder from Melbourne. Despite growing up near Victoria’s Murray River in Yarrawonga and attending Caulfield Grammar, Jordon surprised many by choosing to move further away. Sydney, with its recent acquisitions and strong recruiting position, appealed to him the most.

After being delisted at the end of 2020 without playing a game, Jordon’s free agency status at just 22 made him an attractive prospect. Western Bulldogs, Essendon, St Kilda, and Carlton were among the clubs that expressed interest, but Sydney ultimately won his commitment.

Sydney’s active recruitment strategy, securing players like Brodie Grundy and Taylor Adams via trades and signing Joel Hamling and Jordon as unrestricted free agents, signaled their intent. Jordon’s decision to join Sydney was rewarded with a spot in John Longmire’s midfield for the Opening Round clash against his former team, Melbourne.

While much attention has been on players like Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, and Errol Gulden early in the season, Jordon has quietly impressed. He credits his move to Sydney and the support of the coaching staff for his newfound confidence and success on the field, following a frustrating year with limited opportunities at Melbourne.
