Breaking News: A 20-year-old prospect from the Reds undergoes major surgery…
The Reds announced that infield prospect Edwin Arroyo underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, as reported by C. Trent Rosecrans of the Athletic.
This surgery will sideline him for the entire 2024 season. Arroyo sustained the injury while diving back to a base during a pickoff attempt in Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.
Cincinnati acquired Arroyo as part of the 2022 deadline trade that sent Luis Castillo to Seattle, with Noelvi Marte as the centerpiece. Despite this, Arroyo was considered a prospect of borderline Top 100 caliber in his own right.
He spent most of the previous season at High-A Dayton, where he posted a .248/.321/.427 batting line with 13 home runs and 28 stolen bases. While not outstanding, these were respectable numbers for a 19-year-old.
Arroyo was ranked among the top five to seven prospects in the Reds’ organization by Baseball America, ESPN, and The Athletic.
