The New York Mets might not be finished adding to their roster just yet, even with Opening Day approaching. Recent rumors have surrounded the team, particularly regarding their need for a designated hitter.
While they plan to give Mark Vientos a more prominent role in 2024, they’ve been linked to several power hitters, including J.D. Martinez. While there’s speculation about the Mets making another addition, it’s likely they’re looking for a player who wouldn’t necessarily take at-bats away from Vientos.

Martinez, if signed, would likely serve as the everyday designated hitter, limiting Vientos’ playing time due to his lack of defensive contributions. However, the Mets could still add a veteran for depth. One intriguing option is Brandon Belt, formerly of the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays. Belt had a strong season with the Blue Jays in 2023, hitting 19 home runs and driving in 43 runs in 103 games.
He would likely be a more affordable option than Martinez and could provide depth with potential upside. Signing Belt would allow Vientos to still get plenty of at-bats, as Belt could serve as a bench option. In 2021, Belt hit 29 home runs and drove in 59 runs in just 97 games with the Giants. As a 13-year veteran with an All-Star appearance and two World Series titles, Belt could not only contribute in the lineup but also mentor the team’s young players.
