Naaman Roosevelt, a 12-year professional veteran receiver and now a receivers coach for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, sensed the nervous energy among the prospects during the CFL Combine presented by New Era. As the prospects transitioned from testing on Thursday to their first day of practice on Friday, Roosevelt noted the anxious atmosphere as the players aimed to perform at their best.
Reflecting on the first day of practice, Roosevelt expressed his satisfaction with the performance of UCONN receiver Kevens Clericus, highlighting the mix of nerves and excitement among the players. He emphasized the importance of settling into the routine and allowing everyone to relax and focus on playing football.
On the defensive side, J.C. Sherritt, the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ linebackers coach and run game coordinator, led the linebackers through their initial practice session. Sherritt, a former player turned coach, was impressed with linebackers Joel Dublanco and Global Eteva Mauga-Clements’ performance during practice.
Both Roosevelt and Sherritt, former players who transitioned into coaching roles, view their experience coaching prospects at the combine as valuable. Roosevelt, who previously served as the Riders’ offensive assistant, appreciates the opportunity to work with head coach Scott Milanovich and gain insight into detailed coaching methods. Sherritt, reunited with familiar faces in Saskatchewan, values the chance to work with respected colleagues and contribute to the team’s success.
Despite uncertainties about the upcoming season, both coaches are optimistic about their teams’ potential. Roosevelt eagerly anticipates the return of star receiver Tim White to the Ticats’ lineup and is confident in the team’s defensive strength. Sherritt, drawing from past experiences, remains optimistic about the Riders’ prospects for the upcoming season, emphasizing the positive atmosphere within the organization.
