The Cardinals list keeps piling as right-handed pitcher Sonny Gray and outfielder Lars Nootbaar on the injured list.
St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol announced on Saturday that right-hander Sonny Gray and outfielder Lars Nootbaar will begin the regular season on the injured list.
Gray is dealing with a right hamstring strain, which will land him on the 15-day IL, while Nootbaar has multiple nondisplaced rib fractures, sending him to the 10-day IL. Additionally, outfielder Tommy Edman is also set to start the season on the IL due to a wrist injury.
Gray, 34, was scheduled to start on Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers but suffered the hamstring strain on March 4 during a game against the Washington Nationals. Last season with the Minnesota Twins, Gray posted an 8-8 record with a 2.79 ERA in 32 starts, finishing second in AL Cy Young voting. He signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Cardinals in November.
Nootbaar, 26, sustained his injury on March 2 when he collided with a wall while attempting a catch during a spring training game. He hit .261 with 14 home runs and 46 RBIs for the Cardinals last season.
Gray has a career record of 98-85 with a 3.47 ERA in 279 appearances (270 starts) for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, and Twins.
