CFL All-Star Tim White sought a top-of-the-market salary during CFL free agency, but the Tiger-Cats were cautious about committing to such a high figure without careful consideration.
Hamilton’s General Manager, Ed Hervey, opted for patience, preferring to let free agency determine whether White’s requested $300,000 salary was reasonable.
“While that figure was circulating, it was important for us to wait until negotiations progressed further. We viewed Tim as a priority for our team, but there was a significant gap between our expectations and his asking price. We believed it was essential to observe how the market would respond,” Hervey explained.
“In free agency, it’s crucial to maintain a professional perspective. There’s often a misconception that negotiations become personal, but all discussions were conducted through the agent, and communication was frequent. Both parties were well-informed about market conditions, and it was necessary to allow the market to unfold.”
Ultimately, the Tiger-Cats and White reached an agreement on a two-year contract valued at $210,000 in base salary for the 2024 season, with an additional $25,300 available in incentives based on playtime, performance, and awards. In 2025, White’s salary is set at $224,800, with similar incentives available.
“Free agency presents uncertainties for both players and teams due to its unpredictable nature. We entered the process with clear priorities and were pleased that Tim emerged as a priority for us. Securing him for multiple years is a positive outcome for both parties,” Hervey noted.
“While we remained optimistic throughout negotiations, it was ultimately Tim’s decision based on market factors and his career aspirations.”
In the 2023 season, the 29-year-old White recorded impressive statistics, including 75 receptions for a career-high 1,269 yards and eight touchdowns, leading the league in receiving yards and second-down conversions. He earned recognition as a CFL all-star for the second consecutive year and an East Division all-star for the third straight season.
“I maintained communication with Tim, expressing our desire to retain him without applying undue pressure. As for contract negotiations, I entrusted those responsibilities to others,” Head Coach Scott Milanovich stated.
“Ed and I share a common understanding, and I have confidence in his ability to make decisions that benefit both the organization and the player. While as a coach, I tend to prepare for various scenarios, I’m pleased that we were able to re-sign Tim, as he’s a valuable asset to our offense.”
