Breaking NHL Rumours: Draisaitl’s Contract Saga and Sabres’ Coaching Dilemma Unveiled!

It’s that time again as another round of NHL rumors kick off the week. With the 2023-24 regular season nearing its end, speculation continues to swirl unabated. Attention now turns towards the upcoming summer and the off-season, with the trade deadline now behind us. Several players have the opportunity to secure their futures by signing extensions starting July 1. Additionally, general managers are contemplating potential coaching adjustments they might need to make during the off-season. Today’s NHL rumors revolve around the Edmonton Oilers and the Buffalo Sabres.

NHL Rumours

Edmonton Oilers

Rumour: According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Leon Draisaitl’s future with the Oilers is uncertain, as he may not immediately sign a contract extension.

Analysis: Draisaitl has the option to sign an extension on July 1 as he enters the final year of his contract. Edmonton is aware of the potential competition if Draisaitl hits the open market, but General Manager Ken Holland is determined to retain him.

Currently earning $8.5 million per season, Draisaitl undoubtedly deserves a raise, but the Oilers must consider their budget constraints. The ongoing negotiations will likely dominate discussions until an agreement is reached between the two parties.

Another factor influencing the talks is Connor McDavid’s impending contract renewal after the 2025-26 season. While McDavid earns $12.5 million, he may need to make decisions regarding his salary to accommodate other signings. Draisaitl’s deal will inevitably impact McDavid’s negotiations, potentially mirroring the salary cap challenges faced by teams like the Chicago Blackhawks with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.

Buffalo Sabres

Rumour: Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic speculates on Don Granato’s future as head coach of the Sabres, suggesting he may get another season but anticipates potential changes to the coaching staff.

Analysis: Despite Buffalo’s upward trajectory in the standings, a Stanley Cup Playoff appearance seems unlikely this season, leading to speculation about the coaching situation. While some fans advocate for a coaching change, General Manager Kevyn Adams appears inclined to maintain patience with Granato, viewing this season’s setbacks as part of the team’s growth process.

Although justified in considering a coaching switch, Adams seems willing to give Granato more time. Issues like the team’s problematic power play and player regression may prompt adjustments to the assistant coaching staff during the off-season.

While goalie coach Mike Bales has delivered notable results, the relatively inexperienced assistants, such as Matt Ellis, Jason Christie, and Marty Wilford, may see changes. Fairburn suggests Adams might add a seasoned assistant to provide stability, potentially serving as an interim head coach if needed.
