St Kilda legend Leigh Montagna has been announced as the fifth and final participant in the 2024 Carlton Draft initiative, joining Isaac Smith, Matthew Lloyd, Trent Cotchin, and Dylan Buckley. This initiative involves five local Victorian clubs selecting a player each for a one-off appearance during the year.
Previous editions of the Carlton Draft have featured prominent figures such as Nathan Buckley, Eddie Betts, Shaun Burgoyne, and David Mundy participating in local football matches across the state.
Montagna, who retired from his 16-season career at the Saints seven years ago, expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to the grassroots level of the game.
“Although I’ve been retired for some time now, I’ve remained closely connected to the current game at all levels, which I hope will benefit my performance with my new team as part of The Carlton Draft,” Montagna stated.
“Local football clubs are integral to so many Victorian communities, and I’m genuinely excited about engaging with the individuals who play such pivotal roles in their local areas.
“Football has a unique ability to unite people, and that’s what makes The Carlton Draft so special; it can leave a lasting impact on the club for years to come.”
Bringing nearly 300 games of AFL experience, two All-Australian selections, and five best and fairest podium finishes, the 40-year-old Montagna is well-equipped for this opportunity. His last local football appearance was in 2018 with Ararat, and he is eager to return to the local scene after six years.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my first local senior football match back in 2018 and jumped at the chance to do it again,” Montagna remarked.
“Although I grew up in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne, I am open to playing for any local club that selects me, even if it means traveling down the highway for a few hours.”
Local clubs interested in participating in The Carlton Draft can make nominations via the provided link, with entries closing on Friday, March 29. Once the five selected clubs are finalized, a draft order will be established to select all five participants.
