However, despite their hard work, the Eagles were repeatedly undone by fundamental skill errors, leading to 11 goals conceded off turnovers. Simpson acknowledged the team’s struggles, mentioning turnovers that were difficult to defend against and the frustration of being close to breaking through but getting hurt on the counterattack.

Simpson highlighted a lapse in basic fundamentals during periods when the team introduced speed into the game. He expressed pride in the team’s performance in the final quarter despite the overall result.

With their top ruckman Matt Flynn and co-captain Oscar Allen sidelined due to injuries, the Eagles are facing a shortage of options in the tall forward positions. In their recent match against Kieren Briggs, second-game player Harry Barnett was tasked with rucking, allowing Bailey Williams to move forward.

However, the team’s structure underwent changes in the second half when Barnett was substituted, leaving key forward Jack Darling with limited tall support in attack. Darling struggled to make an impact, failing to score a goal and only managing one mark, while Sam Taylor’s impressive defensive performance for the Giants stifled the Eagles’ forward line.

Speaking about Barnett, Eagles coach Adam Simpson acknowledged the 19-year-old’s efforts and the learning experience gained from his performance. Simpson also highlighted the importance of having Williams play forward in the current circumstances.

Regarding Darling, Simpson acknowledged his effort but noted the lack of reward for his contributions. He emphasized the need for Darling to regain form and perform at his best, especially with Allen sidelined for an extended period. Despite the challenges, Simpson expressed confidence in Darling’s ability and pledged to support him in returning to his top form.
