Breaking News: LAFC add another iconic striker to their squad while anticipating the arrival of Olivier Giroud.

The recent acquisition of Kei Kamara by Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) has undoubtedly made waves. Kamara, who has signed with his record-tying 11th MLS side, joins LAFC for the 2024 season. The club made the announcement on Friday, also revealing an option agreement for 2025.

With Kamara, the league’s all-time leading scorer, joining the roster, there is much anticipation and intrigue surrounding the 2024 campaign. Possessing an extensive goal-scoring record and a wealth of experience, the 39-year-old striker could prove to be a valuable asset for Steve Cherundolo’s team.

“Kei is one of the greatest goal scorers in MLS history and will significantly bolster our attacking options. Given his longstanding history in Southern California, we anticipate that representing LAFC will fill him with pride,” remarked John Thorrington, co-president, and general manager of the club.

In his mission to surpass Landon Donovan’s MLS goal-scoring record, Kamara found himself as a free agent after departing from the Chicago Fire last autumn. With an illustrious career spanning 17 years in Major League Soccer, he has participated in 418 regular-season matches.

In October 2023, Kamara expressed his intention to continue his MLS journey, stating, “I’m not finished yet, definitely. I think this is my final match for the club, so I’ll be moving on.

I’ll play another season.” Reflecting on his time with the club and the accomplishments achieved alongside younger teammates, he added, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed representing this club, and the experiences we’ve shared this year have been remarkable and will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Following the footsteps of MLS legends like Chris Wondolowski and Landon Donovan, the striker holds the third position all-time with 144 goals scored in the league. With nearly two decades of experience in MLS, his presence on the field signifies more than just goal-scoring prowess; it also embodies leadership and tactical astuteness.

This 39-year-old Sierra Leonean striker aims to narrow the gap with Landon Donovan, who currently holds the second position in MLS scoring statistics. Donovan concluded his illustrious Major League Soccer career with 145 goals. Wondolowski, a former USMNT and San Jose Earthquakes striker, surpassed Donovan’s record in 2018.

A capable stopgap until Giroud’s arrival?

With Denis Bouanga leading the attack and Kamara as the target striker, LAFC boasts a formidable offensive lineup. Additionally, the anticipated signing of the renowned French striker Olivier Giroud from AC Milan this summer adds further firepower.

Olivier Giroud will sign with LAFC once his time in Milan comes to an end

During his tenure with the Italian side, the 37-year-old veteran has displayed exceptional form this season, contributing to 14 goals and 9 assists across all competitions. Upon his arrival in Los Angeles, he aims to replicate this performance. However, in the meantime, LAFC views Kamara as a reliable interim solution.

Mateusz Bogusz has been a consistent presence in head coach Steve Cherundolo’s starting lineups this season. He has frequently filled in as a substitute for Bouanga and Cristian Olivera in the forward positions. Additionally, Tomas Angel and Nathan Ordaz provide further alternatives as center forwards.

The Black & Gold have etched their names in history by reaching the MLS Cup finals twice, clinching victory in 2022. Their current record stands at two wins, two losses, and one tie as of Matchday 6 in the Western Conference.
