The New York Mets are taking precautionary measures to address an injury concern and prevent it from escalating.

All-Star second baseman/outfielder Jeff McNeil has been sidelined from hitting for a few days due to left biceps soreness, as confirmed by Mets manager Carlos Mendoza to Tim Healey of Newsday and other reporters on Saturday.

As of now, McNeil has not undergone an MRI scan as the Mets do not consider the issue serious enough to warrant testing at this stage. He will refrain from hitting for several days while continuing with defensive work before undergoing reassessment on Tuesday. If his symptoms persist or worsen, the Mets may opt to conduct imaging tests to ensure appropriate measures are taken.

The Mets are striving to help McNeil regain form after a challenging 2023 season. McNeil, who clinched the batting title in the preceding season, secured a four-year, $50 million contract extension last year.

The team hopes that McNeil, along with outfielder Starling Marte, can maintain their health throughout this season, which would significantly benefit the Mets’ lineup given the uncertainties surrounding several players.

Additionally, infielder Joey Wendle is currently managing right shoulder soreness but is anticipated to make his spring league debut by the week’s end, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

While it’s still early in spring training and Grapefruit League action, the Mets have already encountered a number of injuries, which is par for the course in baseball.

In addition to McNeil and Wendle, ace starting pitcher Kodai Senga is expected to be out for several months due to a posterior capsule strain in his right shoulder. Furthermore, Max Kranick is anticipated to miss a considerable amount of time due to a hamstring injury.
