Michigan Edge Star Breaks Down Defensive Additions, Offensive Line, and Tough Quarterbacks

Mike Sainristil played a pivotal role in recruiting Josaiah Stewart from Coastal Carolina to join Michigan football, and now the two defensive stars share another connection: Both will sport the No. 0 jersey for the Wolverines. Stewart made the switch from his previous No. 5 this spring following Sainristil’s departure to the NFL Draft.

“I used to wear it back in my old school. I wore it when it first came out,” Stewart explained. “So I asked Mike when I came here. He wasn’t budging, so I had to wait a year.”

Now that the No. 0 is available, Stewart promptly claimed it. However, Sainristil reminded the rising senior that he must perform to the standard he set as a defensive captain and game-changer over the past two seasons.

Here are more insights from Stewart’s press conference during Michigan football’s spring practice:

**Josaiah Stewart’s Decision to Return to Michigan in 2024:**

Stewart’s improvement throughout the latter part of the 2023 season made an NFL departure a possibility, but he opted to return for another year.

“I focused on rounding out my game. Any flaws I identified last season, I worked on improving them every day,” Stewart stated. “I strive to become the best player I can, both on and off the field, by being disciplined and handling my responsibilities. This extra year allows me to continue developing as a professional.”

**Michigan’s Defensive Rotation:**

Michigan’s consistent rotation among defensive tackles and edge rushers during its national championship season could continue this fall, Stewart suggested. He highlighted several players to watch at his position, including TJ Guy, Cam Brandt, and Enow Etta.

**Michigan’s Revamped Offensive Line:**

With six offensive linemen replaced, Stewart noted Myles Hinton’s leadership from left tackle and praised Jeff Persi and Andrew Gentry for their contributions to the offensive line.

**Favorite Memory:**

Stewart fondly remembers the final play against Alabama in the Rose Bowl, where he played a crucial role in sealing the victory. He emphasized the unity and teamwork displayed by the defense during that moment.

**Impressions of Quarterback Alex Orji:**

Stewart commended quarterback Alex Orji for his impressive mobility and surprising passing ability, dispelling the notion that Orji is solely a running threat. He highlighted Orji’s knack for escaping pressure and delivering accurate passes downfield.
