LSU’s strategy involves prominently showcasing one of the nation’s top tight ends.

The ReliaQuest Bowl provided a glimpse into LSU’s 2024 offense, serving as a preview rather than just a conclusion. Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier made his first start, while a new offensive play-caller directed the game. This game may have also hinted at Mason Taylor’s upcoming junior season.

Taylor had a standout performance in the bowl game, recording a career-high seven catches for 88 yards. Despite tight ends not being heavily involved in the passing game throughout the season, LSU adjusted to utilize Taylor as a key piece.

Now one of the team’s most experienced players, Taylor could see an expanded role in the offense. With the offense evolving, other tight ends might also play a more significant role.

LSU’s offensive coordinator, Joe Sloan, praised Taylor, calling him one of the team’s best football players and expressing the desire to get him the ball more.

Taylor’s sophomore season did not meet his expectations, despite a decent performance with 36 catches for 348 yards and one touchdown. He believes the offense’s emphasis on deep passing to wide receivers like Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas limited his opportunities but expects a different approach this year.

As LSU’s offense evolves, Taylor anticipates more use of 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends, two receivers), especially in the run game. The team is diversifying its schemes after relying heavily on inside zone and zone reads in previous years.

The success of using 12 personnel depends on all tight ends, not just Taylor. LSU has been bolstering its tight end group through recruiting, adding players like Mac Markway, Ka’Morreun Pimpton, and Connor Gilbreath, along with incoming freshman Trey’Dez Green.

Despite the departure of key receivers, LSU still has talent at the position, including Kyren Lacy, Chris Hilton, and transfers CJ Daniels and Zavion Thomas.

Looking ahead, LSU plans to involve Taylor more in the passing game, aiming to make him a primary target. Taylor, who has started 25 games over the last two years, is considered one of the best tight ends in the country by Sloan.

Taylor is determined to exceed his own expectations in the upcoming season, aiming for a more productive and impactful role in the offense.
