Former Kansas point guard and six-year NBA veteran Devonté Graham recently found himself at a loss when questioned by a San Antonio Express-News sports writer about the active NBA player with the highest career points in the NCAA Tournament. The 29-year-old reserve for the San Antonio Spurs was taken aback to discover that he held the top spot with 207 points scored in 15 tournament games spanning from the 2014-15 season through KU’s Final Four campaign of 2017-18. “It’s an interesting fact,” Graham shared with Jeff McDonald of the Express-News. “I think it’s because a lot of these guys didn’t play college. I don’t know if it’s really a big deal or not. It’s news to me. That’s another bonus for me I guess.”
Graham’s NCAA tally surpassed former UCLA player Jaime Jaquez of the Miami Heat, who scored 200 points, and former Duke player Grayson Allen of the Phoenix Suns, who tallied 195 points. Additionally, former Oklahoma standout Buddy Hield of the Philadelphia 76ers accumulated 190 points, and former Kentucky/UCLA player Johnny Juzang of the Utah Jazz amassed 174 tourney points. During Graham’s time at KU, the team achieved an 11-4 record in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Elite Eight twice and making it to the Final Four in his senior year, where they were defeated by Villanova. Reflecting on his Final Four experience, Graham said, “Besides getting whooped by Villanova (95-79), I had a great time.”
A sought-after interviewee, especially during NCAA tournament time, Graham was recently asked on the Bally Sports San Antonio/Spurs Live pregame TV show to predict the winner of the 2024 NCAA tournament. Favoring his hometown team, N.C. State, he cited their current momentum. Graham emphasized the intensity and aspirations of college players, noting their desire to eventually reach the NBA. He expressed satisfaction with his decision to play four years in college, which allowed him to participate in four NCAA tournaments.
Graham’s Spurs teammate Zach Collins, who played for Gonzaga, acknowledged Graham’s achievement as the top scorer among active NBA players in tournament history. Despite a challenging season with limited playing time, Graham has remained a leader within the Spurs’ squad, earning respect from both his teammates and coach Gregg Popovich. Popovich commended Graham’s dedication despite his reduced role. Of being a leader, Graham said, “I’m just doing what I’ve always done.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining positivity and motivation, especially during tough times.
