Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung will be out for an extended period due to surgery on his broken right wrist, the team announced Wednesday. Initially projected to miss about six weeks, Jung will now be sidelined for 8 to 10 weeks as the operation in Phoenix was more complicated than anticipated.
Rangers general manager Chris Young stated that Jung underwent successful surgery on his fractured wrist, but the procedure revealed more extensive damage than initially expected. The repairs were reported to be “a little bit more involved than appeared” on the initial X-rays, as per The Dallas Morning News.
Jung, 26, sustained the injury after being hit by a pitch during Monday’s 9-3 road victory against the Tampa Bay Rays and was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the ninth inning when Tampa Bay reliever Phil Maton hit him with a pitch on a swinging strike.
Despite missing 40 games due to a fractured thumb, Jung finished fourth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2023. Last season, he posted a .266 batting average with 23 home runs and a .781 OPS. During the postseason, Jung batted .308 with a .867 OPS, contributing to the Rangers’ World Series championship.
In 122 games, Jung recorded a .266/.315/.467 slash line with 23 homers, 70 RBIs, and 75 runs. During the Rangers’ championship run, he batted .308 with three home runs, eight RBIs, and 13 runs in 17 playoff games.
