Finlayson has acknowledged using a homophobic slur and has extended an apology to the Essendon player involved.
Port Adelaide stated that Finlayson disclosed the incident during the three-quarter time break and subsequently apologized to the affected Essendon player on the field after the match. The club announced that Finlayson would undergo counseling led by club leaders in the following days and would provide a statement soon. Port Adelaide indicated that they would await the completion of the AFL’s investigation into the matter.
AFL spokesperson Jay Allen confirmed the league’s awareness of the slur and stated that the AFL Integrity Unit (AFLIU) was conducting an investigation. The AFL is treating the issue with utmost seriousness and will update accordingly once the investigation concludes.
Several players reportedly heard the slur and informed the umpires, while league officials also picked up the comment via the umpires’ microphone. Should Finlayson be found to have breached AFL rules by making a homophobic slur, he could face sanctions from the league.
Despite the incident, Finlayson had a notable performance in the match, kicking three goals and contributing significantly to Port Adelaide’s victory over Essendon. However, the seriousness of the alleged slur remains a focal point of the investigation.
It’s noteworthy that North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson faced repercussions earlier in the year for directing an inappropriate comment towards St Kilda players during a pre-season game, resulting in a fine and a suspended sentence. As part of his penalty, Clarkson is required to attend a pride in sport program.
