If an idle mind is the devil’s workshop, then Chris Jones may find himself with more room for innovation in 2024.
Following two seasons of juggling roles as general manager, head coach, and defensive coordinator for the Edmonton Elks, Jones relinquished one of those responsibilities this offseason with the hiring of Jason Shivers. Shivers, a 41-year-old protege, joins from Saskatchewan to serve as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, easing the workload for his mentor.
Shivers, who began his coaching career under Jones in Toronto in 2013, believes that this change will allow Jones to explore new ideas and strategies. Despite having always been deeply involved in all aspects of the game, Jones may now have the freedom to delve even further into innovative tactics, thanks to the support staff in place.
While Shivers acknowledges that not much will change schematically, he anticipates implementing some adjustments in teaching methods and preparation to elevate the team’s performance. He aims to build on the foundation Jones has established, striving for a fast, physical, and aggressive style of play.
Jones’ return to Edmonton in 2022 has been marked by sub-par defensive performances, leading to speculation about his future with the organization. Shivers recognizes the challenge of Jones relinquishing control over an aspect of the game he’s long dominated but believes that his mentor’s guidance and input will remain invaluable.
As the Elks prepare to kick off their 2024 season, Shivers and Jones will collaborate closely to ensure the team is primed for success. Their shared history and mutual respect bode well for their partnership as they aim to rejuvenate the Elks’ fortunes on the field.
