Kansas football loses its projected No. 1 tight end to Achilles tear
As the Kansas football team gears up for the 2024 season amid high expectations following a successful 9-4 record and bowl victory last year, the retention of key players like Jalon Daniels, Devin Neal, and Cobee Bryant positions the Jayhawks for a promising campaign under Coach Lance Leipold.
Despite the return of star players and the addition of several transfers to bolster the roster, the Jayhawks received unfortunate news during spring ball practices. DeShawn Hanika, the top-rated offseason transfer and projected primary tight end target for the upcoming season, reportedly suffered a season-ending injury.

According to Bleacher Report’s Bryson Stricker, Hanika tore his Achilles during practice on Saturday, dealing a significant blow to Kansas’ offensive plans. The Iowa State transfer, who was expected to fill the void left by Mason Fairchild’s departure, will likely miss the entire season before even making his debut as a Jayhawk.
In the 2022 season, Hanika showcased his talent with 17 receptions for 244 yards and four touchdowns for the Cyclones. However, his collegiate journey faced a setback when he and other ISU players were suspended last year due to an illegal sports wagering scandal. Despite this, Hanika retained eligibility for one more year of NCAA athletics due to his participation in the 2020 COVID-19-affected season.
The recovery timeline for a torn Achilles typically ranges from 10 to 12 months, leaving Hanika’s return uncertain. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound tight end may consider applying for a medical redshirt to extend his college career at Kansas or another institution.
With the departure of Will Huggins to the transfer portal, Kansas now relies on tight ends Trevor Kardell and Jared Casey, who were slated for significant roles in the 2024 season. Despite this setback, the team remains optimistic, with injured starters like left tackle Calvin Clements and defensive end Jereme Robinson expected to recover in time for fall camp.
