AFL Administration Addresses Jeremy Finlayson's Homophobic Remark with Firm Action

Andrew Dillon, the AFL boss, has emphasized that Port Adelaide player Jeremy Finlayson will face consequences for his use of a homophobic slur directed at an opponent during the Gather Round event.

Dillon confirmed an ongoing league investigation into Finlayson’s offensive comment towards an Essendon player and suggested that a decision regarding penalties for the 28-year-old might be deferred until Thursday.

The incident, captured by an umpire’s microphone during the Friday night match at Adelaide Oval, was promptly reported by Finlayson to club officials during the three-quarter time break.

In his public apology issued on Sunday, Finlayson expressed deep remorse and took full accountability for his actions, committing to self-improvement through education and reflection.

Dillon stressed that Finlayson’s case would be addressed independently, following North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson’s recent $20,000 fine and suspended two-match ban for a similar offense in a pre-season game.

Port Adelaide president David Koch faced criticism for suggesting comparable penalties for Finlayson during an appearance on ABC’s Offsiders.

Dillon reaffirmed the league’s commitment to taking all incidents seriously and stated that accountability would be upheld, underscoring the need for swift and decisive action.

The decision on potential suspension for Finlayson will rest with AFL football boss Laura Kane and general counsel Stephen Meade, following a thorough investigation and adherence to established protocols.

Port Adelaide’s upcoming matches against Fremantle and Collingwood will proceed as scheduled, with Dillon reiterating the league’s serious stance on such behavior and its commitment to a fair and comprehensive investigative process.
