Auburn’s top man from the 2023-24 Season Opt to Enter Transfer Portal

Now, it seems Auburn may be leaning towards a complete overhaul at the point guard position.

However, it’s important to acknowledge that just because players like Holloway and Donaldson have entered the transfer portal, it doesn’t guarantee their departure. Until they officially commit to another program, the possibility of them returning to Auburn remains open.

Additionally, Auburn guard Denver Jones received some playing time at point guard towards the end of last season.

Meanwhile, Auburn has secured the commitment of 5-star McDonald’s All-American Tahaad Pettiford, who is ranked as the top point guard in the 2024 recruiting class. Despite assumptions that Pettiford would become Auburn’s primary point guard, head coach Bruce Pearl has cautioned against this notion.

Pearl clarified on March 28 that Pettiford’s primary strength lies in scoring rather than traditional point guard duties. Despite his exceptional athleticism and scoring ability, Pettiford isn’t considered a pure point guard by Pearl.

With Auburn facing the prospect of losing both starting point guards from the previous season, it’s conceivable that Pettiford may see some time at the point guard position for the Tigers. However, Auburn will need to diversify its options rather than solely relying on Pettiford.

Immediately following the conclusion of Auburn’s season, Pearl and his coaching staff began exploring the transfer portal for potential recruits. They intensified their efforts after Auburn’s early exit from the NCAA Tournament, scouring for experienced players to bolster the team.

Among the prospects linked to Auburn is Furman transfer point guard JP Pegues, who boasts impressive statistics from his time with the Paladins. Pegues, averaging 18.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, is reportedly considering Auburn along with three other schools.

Another player of interest is Washington State’s Myles Rice, who has ties to former Auburn star Jabari Smith. With a solid rookie campaign in the Pac-12, Rice’s potential addition could provide valuable depth to Auburn’s lineup.
